Richard Lawson has been writing on and off for 15 years and in that time has built up a considerable body of work, in the form of short stories, novellas and poetry.

The short stories mainly deal with innocence, pathos and nature and are heavily influenced by ‘Magic Realism’, as popularised by the Latin American writers Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Isabel Allende and other novelists such as Julian Barnes, Ben Okri and Peter Carey.

His University years spent studying history, philosophy, anthropology and archaeology has had a deep and abiding influence on subject matter.

The years spent onstage as a performer/musician and his time in commercial kitchens/hospitality and on the farm as custodian of the land have also been instrumental in shaping his outlook.

Flora and Fauna is a book of short stories ostensibly about nature and mans interaction with it. Stories range from Tree House which, as the title says, is about a tree house and the owners magical and tragic relationship with it; to a seaside tale of an autistic boy who can converse with birds and onto the last days of an Alzheimer’s patient who dreams of flying and morphs into a bird whilst talking openly and freely with his dead wife.
